ALERT: Facist 40k Gaming Mafia

This is not a Conspiracy Theory Rant. This is a Heads Up. I have noticed there are some major dickheads running around the Internet belligerently and fanatically spouting how the game should be played according to their own dictates. They have never won any major tournaments and never post any batreps. They contend that the game is not competitive anymore. Here are a few known members from the Facist 40k Gaming Mafia:

*Danny Internets
*sourclams
*sidstyler
*Timmah

I have caught all of these e-thugs lying more than one time on the Internet.

I forgot sourclams on the ArdBoyz semi finals in KC 2008.

@ MOM

Sure everyone is entitled to their opinions but these guys are extremely abrasive and try to intimidate others. They are partially responsible for bringing a decline to Dakka.

how old are you? 14? 15? I think i grew out of calling people nazis around that age.

My advice is to stop worrying about what people say and think on whine seer and get a girlfriend.

trust me, you wont regret it!

if i have misjudged the situation and you are in fact old enough to know better, then i apologise and instead offer you the advice that you should fill out an online dating card and get searching for miss right.

you'll thank me one day

Maybe I have missed something, but I am not aware of any intimidation by the people you mentioned.

Danny Internets and Sourclams seem pretty reasonable to me. Of course I disagree with some of the things they say, but there's nothing wrong with that.

Timmah and Sidstyler are just mini-Steleks. Timmah has claimed he wins lots of tournaments locally which is an obvious lie but for the most part they are harmless.

As far as I have seen these guys are not rude so they can say whatever they want.

@ MOM

I value your objectivity. I suppose I am quite biased versus Danny since he had a lot of very bad things to say about a friend of mine two years ago. sourclams is obviously bright but I just don't find him to be honest.

THIS is what the heads-up was? Really?

C'mon GBF...this is lame. Maybe it's cos I'm jealous - I applied to join the Mafia, but the Concrete Shoes didn't come in my size, so they asked me to leave.

it was late in hte day at work and I was waiting to eject into the weekend mode. Yes MOM & the King are right... This was TOTALLY lame. I haft whipped myself with a whetted noodle repeatedly at the local Italy eateria. So the red alert is lowered. Thanks for your guys' feedback & I really appreciate it.!

Okay Danny you have indeed posted some batreps so I was wrong about you. I am very impressed that you were in the top 3 of the 1st round of last year's Ard Boyz that featured 3 gamers total. Very impressive. Did you guys play in someone's basement? The lighting is off in some of your pix so I was just wondering.

It was a store in NJ. I also took first place in a 40 person 'Ard Boyz tournament the year before, making me two for two. Unfortunately couldn't make it to the semi-finals last year due to a vacation I had scheduled, but I'll be there this year.

40 is very respectable. I can't deny that.

I have some friends up in Jersey like DevianID, frgsnwntr & yermom. They are all very solid gamers. You can ask yermom about my mech BA.

Anyways let's run through some common problems frequently encountered when playing in a 40k tournament. I will try to rank them starting with the ones I hate the most :

1. TO favoritism - This covers a galatic topic of discussion. Basically the TO is pulling for his home boys and matches up outsiders versus the best local players trying to find a bad matchup for your list. I have found the best way to deal with this is come with a club of great players. You are playing for your club, not yourself. It's very hard for a TO neutralize a group of players. Your club should play fair and be on their best behaviour at all times.

2. Soft scores - This is an extremely prickly subject. Sure TFGs can game this but moreso at small events as opposed to big ones. I have played at lots of GTs finishing in top 10 my fair share. I will hammer a rules lawyer everytime. That is how I roll. I know all the rules inside out and back and forth again. That said I have won Best Sportsmanship while pulling all wins on multiple occassions. I always be myself. I don't game the system. If you play in big events soft scores help honest players and hurt the TFGs. When people whine about soft scores online it immediately raises a red flag. Honest players know that TFGs do not like soft scores. Soft scores are defense against rampant cheating. There are those players who have no ethics and will cheat as much as possible. While they are the exception they do exist. Saying players and TOs must marshal their forces to corral TFGs is all well and good but often it falls short as often it's just your word against theirs. The judge cannot stand beside one table an entire match and sometimes it only takes one big cheat to win, this is what TFGs are banking on. If you play in enough tournaments it all washes out.

3. Craptastic Missions - I dislike poorly thought out missions that are not playtested. "I thought it would be cool if the entire table counts a dangerous terrain and we use night fight every turn!" Ugggggh!

4. TFGs - See my thought in (1).

5. Noncompetitive players that don't know the rules - This is why I don't bother playing pickup games anymore. Why are they playing in a competitive environment?? They will tell you how awesome was 2nd edition and how much 5th sucks. I probably should have ranked this higher.

So here is an example from a thread over in the Dakka Dakka Tournament Discussions thread. The discussion is in regards to using sportsmanship as a soft score for tournaments.

[AgeofEgos]
...However, such individuals are going to make a mess of the game regardless of any checklist.[end quote]

[Danny Internets replies]
...so the solution is to let them make a mess of the game AND give them a way to dick over their opponent? In what universe does that make sense? Structure is meaningless if its so subjective as to be defined as whatever someone wants it to be.[end quote]

Danny has replied to just about every response that is favorable to using sportsmanship as a soft score for tournaments. Often Danny repeats the same mantra time and time again. To me there is no discussion, the same people against sportsmanship continue to harp on it with no resolution whatsoever. Dakka is a prominent discussion board that many people read. Topics such as these can be very influential. This year and next the GW circuit is being run by groups independent of GW. There is no rubric provided by GW as how to score an event... It's totally up to each group. What I have seen is that so far soft scores have been very popular this year. There have been some problems such closed comp (TO does not release to the public how comp is scored) but then again every event has some problems. Should the TOs cave to a vocal minority? Do the TOs care? Sure they care... The overall winner for the Northwest Conquest was stripped of his title following a highly publicized debacle on Dakka. Personally I think all decisions made by TOs during an event should be adhered to other the internet lynchmobs will rule supreme. My best friend won the Ard Boyz in 2008 and was the subject of much persecution on the Internet by people such as Danny Internets.

So sure everyone has an opinion. I was suspended from posting on Dakka for a month (later reprimanded to week) for voicing my opinion about issues such as these. Maybe I am a fascist too regarding my opinions but I can voice them here with no reprecussion since this is my own blog.

GBF, you were suspended for repeatedly insulting other users instead of actually participating in discussions, not because you tried to voice your opinion. I believe the straw that broke the camel's back was "Okay so now everyone knows that you are retarded. Lead paint will do that." Don't pretend to be some righteous martyr. You were trolling (again) and got called out on it (again).

Terminus Est said...

It's frustrating when you do discuss a topic and then are repeatedly asked to restate your position. It's really not much of a discussion in that thread. You yourself constantly repeat that sportsmanship does not work because TFGs will game it. You never have once discussed the positions of others that support sportsmanship. Many of us feel that using the TFG as an example is a house made from cards or better yet a strawman argument.
